Meeting Minutes 3/24/08

Engineering Showcase: April 9th, 16th, 24th

  1. Carolyn is on the committee running it.
  2. Engineering admissions (Daniel Krese (?)) trying to create a program to encourage engineers to enroll here.  Have 5 or 6 engineering groups in Levering Plaza – EWB as part of it.
  3. Email Yang about showcase – he is already working on something that can make the ram pump run.
  4. Need people to man the booth – maybe get a video (Etienne has a video of the ram pump working)
  5. Carolyn is going to send out an email asking for help

Projects

  1. Just a note: designate one person to write the journal – an entry everyday is very helpful

MIT Poverty Initiative: April 19th (Student Expo Day – whole event is April 18th – 20th)

  1. Iris is going to get more information about it; whether than can cover travel and lodging costs
  2. Networking?  Grants?
  3. Paul Farmer is speaking
  4. Carolyn will look into possible lodging

BE Conference: May 28th – 30th

  1. Baltimore
  2. Professional Conference
  3. We have a booth reserved
  4. At Camden Yards

Next General Body Meeting: April 16th (Wed.)

  1. Election Meeting
  2. Could find a speaker – don’t have one yet
  3. Could have a social: leaders can talk about what they’re doing this summer

  5. Try and get people to come!

  7. Location: Charles Commons Room
  8. Recruit people to be in your position if you intend to move up
  9. Shane might not be president next year

CSC Chocolate Festival

  1. Linda will email to get volunteers (use Doodle)
  2. If you volunteer 1 hour you get two tickets (1 ticket = 1 free chocolate J )
  3. Build gingerbread houses – but they provide all the materials!

EWB Social Event: Orioles Baseball Game – April 4th at 7:15 PM

  1. Orioles vs. Mariners
  2. Collegetown bus will go down – we could use a CSC van
  3. Sitting in Section 3
  4. Every team gets a list of names and send it to Linda
  5. $5 for a ticket

Fundraising at Camden Yards

  1. Two days of training (take a test) – get certified
  2. Over the summer
  3. Maybe need 8 people to run a stand
  4. Etienne will get more information
  5. Host only one month(?)
  6. Partner with CPP?

Fundraising Committee

  1. Finalizing ideas for fundraising
  2. Getting letters from each team
  3. Need templates for letters; make sure the team leaders read it before they are sent out
  4. Shane and Etienne both have some templates and will send them out to the team leaders
  5. Etienne emailed the rotary representative for EWB, but he didn’t get back to him – will email again (and hopefully can get a date to present to the department)
    1. Goals: fundraising AND recruiting
  6. Trying to work with the Development Office
  7. Shane and Etienne are meeting with Dr. Ball on Thursday

Working with the Baltimore Professionals

  1. Guatemala has an event planned for working with professionals
  2. Carolyn is going to email two geotechnical engineers who approached her
  3. Stay in contact!
  4. Every year have at least one joint meeting

EWB-USA Conference

  1. Get a EWB-USA shirt for Shane (Size: Large)
  2. Break-out sessions – brainstorm ideas
  3. Listen closely to other people’s problems – pay attention to what people have tried
  4. Listen to HOW PEOPLE DO THINGS!
  5. Bring business cards! (if you have them) – paper with contact information!
  6. Which countries, why they’re there – hopping around from communities(?); what went wrong, what went right
  7. There are speakers, but they aren’t the people you get the most out of
  8. Talk about JHU too!
  9. They will remember us – we won two awards last year (best agricultural project, best photo)
  10. Dress BUSINESS CASUAL
  11. Logistics:
    Dr. Ball will drive us to BWI airport for our 6:45 PM flight.

    We get to Seattle at 11ish and Linda’s sister will pick us up and will drop some people off with our host and Linda will being going back with her sister (Jasmine will be staying with her professional partner.)  Etienne and Dr. Ball are staying in the same place (Dr. Ball’s friend).

  1. Iris and Shane are working on it tomorrow
  2. Nominations are due Wednesday at 5 PM
