Mondialogo's Community Award

Mondialogo a partnership initiated by Daimler and UNESCO that aims to promote intercultural dialogue and exchange. In the past, EWB-JHU's South Africa project applied and received the Mondialogo Engineering Award. This year, EWB-JHU's Ecuador project sent in their application. A fact sheet for the Ecuador Project can be found in the Resources section. Although Mondialogo has not yet sent out the results of the application process for this year, there is an opportunity for the EWB-JHU Ecuador project to win Mondialogo's Community Award.

A description of Mondialogo's Community Award is provided below:

" What's your favourite project proposal? For the first time, a Community Award is being awarded within the Mondialogo Engineering Award. Your vote counts! All visitors of the Mondialogo Internet Portal will have the opportunity to support their favourite project. The project team with the most votes will be invited to the Mondialogo Engineering Award Symposium."

The contest ended on Friday, June 12th.

US EPA P3 (People, Prosperity, and the Planet) and EWB-JHU South Africa

In 2008, EWB-JHU's South Africa Project Team, in collaboration with our South African partners, was awarded a $10,000 EPA P3 "Phase 1" grant entitled "Development of an Economical and Sustainable Irrigation Ram Pump for Community Gardening in South Africa". The team has accomplished the phase 1 activities and has prepared a "report/proposal" that has been submitted for Phase 2 funding, which, if funded, would be $75,000 to help the team "build capacity" at the Zakhe Agricultural School (a South African agricultural boarding high school) so that they can undertake ram pump construction and dissemination on their own, using proceeds from the sale of ram pump systems to commercial farmers to finance subsidization of systems for communal gardening groups that are working to help feed at-risk children.

At the Design Expo, our student team will be presenting a poster and a video of the ram pump in action. They will also have a pump with them, to show all of the working parts, etc. to the judges. This is not a ram pump of their own design, but is rather a "home made" South African design (the "Alcock" Ram Pump), which our students have been installing in past work and which they have been studying through this P3 grant. The EWB-JHU South Africa project team has also helped the Zakhe Agricultural School with the implementation of their own pump systems, as well as a curriculum of study designed around the pump.

    Information about the Expo

On April 18 - 20, 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host one of the most exciting sustainability events of the year: the National Sustainable Design Expo on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Expo hosts exhibitors who will display their sustainable programs or technologies and EPA's 5th Annual P3 (People, Prosperity and the Planet) Award student design competition. More than 250 college and university students, and their faculty advisors from around the country, will exhibit their designs for a sustainable tomorrow and compete for the prestigious EPA P3 Award. You'll see novel approaches to green design and buildings, innovative ideas for alternative energy and materials, new technologies for clean drinking water, and more.

The event is free and open to the public. The National Sustainable Design Expo featuring EPA's P3 Award will take place near the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. between 3rd and 4th streets, NW. The event will be open on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Monday, April 20, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m.
